New to Fox Hunting?
Choose your pace!
Fox Hunts are organized in two or three "flights" or "fields" depending on how many riders are participating.
You don't have to ride at a gallop and jump all the fences to participate in a hunt!
Choose the flight that matches your experience and desire for the level of participation you're looking for.
We are a drag hunt club - meaning there are no live foxes hunted. Hounds follow scent.
First Flight
Riders in the first flight stay closest to the huntsman and hounds. They stay with hounds as they gallop over all obstacles, through water and all types of terrain. The first field should always consist of experienced riders with safe horses accustomed to hunting.
Second Flight
The second flight is usually mounted foxhunters who don't want to jump, prefer a slower pace, or have green horses that need to be trained to foxhunt. The second field goes around obstacles but tries to stay up with the hounds whenever possible. Riders get to see what's going on and yet not interfere with the huntsman.
Third Flight
The third flight is often called "Tally Slow" or "Hilltoppers" because they take their time and they're usually positioned on hills or places that give them maximum viewing opportunities. This group of riders doesn't jump or gallop. They mostly walk or trot, and they're in no hurry to stay with hounds.
Attire is flexible!
We understand that some riders may not have all of the traditional attire or tack that traditionally comes with fox hunting. It is more important to us that you try the experience to see if it's something you want to pursue in the future. Wear any respectable attire and come with a clean horse and safe tack, and you're welcome to join the fun! Helmets are required.
Attire is different for the informal Cubbing Season than it is for the Formal Hunt Season which usually starts in October. Just do your best to emulate the following dress guidelines:
Cubbing Season
Tan or rust breeches, black tall boots or half chaps, polo shirt, and black helmet.
Formal Season
Tan breeches, black dress boots, white dress shirt, stock tie with pin, black jacket, white saddle pad, and black helmet.
